Devotion to Ceres

Today I asked my guides/ancestors what kind of message or story they had for me for the day (a question I’ve been inviting lately) and I pulled the High Priestess from my Tarot deck.

The card is associated with the moon in astrology. The image of the moon on the card is a waxing crescent 🌙, the same moon in the sky today. The new moon a few days ago was in Aries, and today the waxing crescent moon is conjunct the asteroid Ceres in Gemini.

The imagery of the High Priestesses headpiece: a sphere sitting on two horns brings the moon’s exhalation in Taurus to mind - and Ceres’s association with the Earth as the goddess of agriculture.

The story of Ceres and Persephone is right there on the card. The imagery of light and dark (the heavens and the underworld) with the pomegranates behind her calling to mind the story of the abduction of Ceres’s daughter Persephone by Pluto and the fruits of the underworld that tied her to him eternally for half of the year.

And, to personalize it all in case I wasn’t sure, Ceres is approaching (within 15°) her return to my natal position. In my natal chart, Ceres is in my 12h exactly opposite my sun in Sagittarius and in a square to my moon in Virgo and Pallas in Pisces (creating a grand cross in my 12, 3, 6, 9 houses). I’ve honestly been waiting on the day she’d talk to me, knowing this is a big aspect in my chart but not knowing how to connect with Ceres.

A spark of inspiration. Understanding that the 12th house is a place of devotion, I feel called to be devotional to Ceres.

Goddess of agriculture, thank you for your blessings. I have never gone without food, and I know this is a blessing. I know there are humans suffering on Earth today without food, and I know that in this time of instability economically and geopolitically there are and will likely continue to be more disruptions to our global food supply. I thank you for teaching us how to make food from crops, I marvel at the magic of how much can be done with such simple things like grain.

In devotion to Ceres today, I made simple cornmeal muffins.

I hope to maintain this devotion by learning to make the basics. I eat grains all the time, but I take for granted the transformation of such simple ingredients into incredibly diverse and delicious dishes. Here comes the cornbread, tortillas, polenta, pancakes, bread, rice, porridge, rice pudding….

Thank you goddess Ceres for being here with me today. Thank you for your gifts from the Earth 🌾
